Environment bonus funding from BAFA for electric cars

IMPORTANT: Before you want to buy or lease an electric car, make sure BEFORE that it is eligible for the BAFA environmental bonus. You can find this information on the BAFA website under “Energy Efficiency” -> “Electromobility” -> Submit an individual application and list of vehicles.

With gasoline and fuel prices rising, more and more people are considering buying an electric car. Especially with bargain hunters, electric cars have become more popular than ever before in recent months. The BAFA environmental bonus is also very attractive for German e-car buyers: with up to 9.000 euros for purely electric cars and 6.750 euros for plug-in hybrids, you can save a third of the total price for the e-car in some cases.

We got a Citroen e-C4 electric car for the test. The Citroen e-C4 is very economical and an absolute winner if you plan to use it around town, but not so much if you plan to drive long distances on the motorway.

If I charge the Citroen e-C4 at home, I pay around 15€-17€ for a distance of 370 km, at the normal charging station 19€-22€ and at the fast charging station 27€-29€. Compared to a normal Citroen C-4 fueled with petrol or diesel, you save almost 70% to 80% in costs every time you charge the vehicle, so it makes sense to use it in city centers, where there are many charging stations.

Environment bonus promotion of the BAFA instructions

Not all vehicles are (anymore) funded.

However, if your vehicle is subsidized, you can apply for the subsidy as follows:

On the website of BAFA - Federal Office of Economics and Export Control under the menu "Energy Efficiency" and the item "Electromobility" find and click on the entry "Submit individual application".

If you would like to complete the application via the federal user account, you can do so easily with your user data and the link in the description will take you to the login.

If you do not have a Bund user account, scroll down to the individual sub-items and click on "Förderportal". Here you will find the sub-item “Application form”, which you can access via the link “Go to the application portal here”.

In the digital form, fill out all personal / company-specific data and vehicle information and click on "Next". You then have to upload 3 different documents, depending on whether you leased the vehicle or bought it directly.

For leasing you need these documents:

– the leasing contract

– the binding order

– the calculation of the leasing rate

When buying:

- the invoice

Additionally when purchasing a used vehicle:

– Evidence of the list price of the new vehicle in the form of an appraisal from Deutsche Automobil Treuhand (DTA), an appraisal from Schwacke GmbH or a new vehicle invoice.

Finally, you will be asked to confirm the truthful answer in an overview of all information. Only then will you receive an e-mail in which you will be asked to sign and upload this confirmation in the second step.
